Røssdalen

If you follow the river leading into the Espedalsvatnet northeast, you get to the Lona lake at the entrance into narrow valley. Here the road ends at a parking. The parking fee is 100 NUK valid for three days stay, obviously designed for people going on multiple day hikes into the remote wilderness up the river. From the parking you already have a beautiful panorama with the lake and the cragged mountain flanks bordering the narrow valley. The track leading into the valley is an easy and comfortable hike along the river and past the Røssdalsvatnet to the Røssdalen Camping which basically is a large lawn where you can put up your tent.

It is a very beautiful walk over to here, but things only really get interesting once you enter the narrow path behind the camping. It is a much less comfortable path running through difficult terrain within a jungle of moss-covered rocks and dense woods. But it is a fantastic nature with a certain kind of magic, always close to the river and yet easy to get lost in.

About two kilometres away lies a second lake, the Indravatnet. To get there takes at least an hour despite the short distance as the path is really difficult to hike. Shortly before the lake you´ll reach a wide band of rocks which you have to pass. That band consists of car-sized rocks – obviously from a huge rockfall – with deep crevices in between. With dry weather it is a difficult climb across this rock stream and when it rains it gets dangerous.

The Indravatnet is the destination of a marked hike and from here you can return to the campground on another tricky path running along the other side of the river. For the more adventurous that lake is just a stopover on the way into the remote upper valley and / or up the bordering mountains. Despite the short distance of the hike from the parking to Indravatnet and back this is a physically challenging hike and requires some mountain experience. Appropriate clothing and especially shoes are mandatory!
