Michi: I personally find contest formats in big wave surfing interesting, because the boys push themselves to new limits and often you get crazy footage from that. At the same time you have more safety because of the big amount of tow and rescue teams at the location. Itīs nevertheless a pity, when at the best day of the year 30 jet skies are screaming around at a tow in wave because they have a contest.
I think that the XXL format is a good thing because the guys donīt do anything that they would have done without the contest. They just surf big waves and get filmed or photographed. And it gives “developing” big wave countries like Ireland, Spain or Portugal a mark on the map of the biggest surfable waves of the world.
The Tow World Cup seems to be a good thing for the big wave surfers of the world to measure themselves in different waves and go to the limit. But I think that logistically it’s very difficult to organize it. It’s already difficult enough just to score enough good, big waves for an contest on a certain place of the world and it makes it even more difficult to manage this with an armada of guys and jet skies spread all around the whole world. But it would be cool to see guys like Ross or Garrett rip in European big waves…
