Welcome fall! Welcome fog! Welcome swell!

A story about why you should not despair when the summer is finally over.

Itīs more or less the same story every year. During summer holidays – mostly a few weeks spent in France – I taste surfing blood again and manage to get the old body halfway back in form. Back home Iīm eager to use this regained form at the North Sea breaks. But almost every September – the best time to score good waves in combination with acceptable temperatures – is somehow way too packed with dates that this golden month passes without me getting wet.

So was September 2012. At the end of this month I once again got desperate, without even having the possibility to go on a longer trip in October. Regularly watching the forecasts didnīt help either. The North Sea didnīt get anything worth going while one hurricane after another was crossing the Atlantic further south. At one point this was too much. Another long period ground swell was on its way and there was a chance for offshore winds in the Celtic regions Bretagne, Cornwall and Ireland. My time schedules left me the chance to disappear for a maximum of six days.

Itīs about 1.400 km one way from my hometown to Cornwall, including a ferry ride. So things had to be planned carefully to squeeze a maximum of water time out of this trip. I kept my options open until the day before I left. With the last forecast of that day I cancelled the other option Brittany due to unfavourable winds and booked the ferry to the island. Booking a day before departure is also the last chance to get a reasonable prized ticket.
