Gwithian had head high waves and a light side-offshore wind. I found a peak for myself and had a very nice longboard session. After this I went for a little cruise and had a look at Hell´s Mouth, before I went back to Gwithian to score another nice session. The night I spent at the harbour parking in Penzance, one of the few legal places in the area to spend the night in a van outside camp grounds. Pretty good base camp if there wouldn´t have been the local village youth doing car races on the parking in the middle of the night.
The next morning I went to Gwithian again. There was no wind and thick fog was covering the coast. Gave all these graveyards in the area that mystic touch, that make you start believing all these ancient tales about sorcerers, witches, magicians, ghosts and hellishly creatures.
It also made the surf a bit tricky. It was about 2 – 3 feet and it was very difficult to find a proper line-up position. Incoming sets stayed invisible until the very last moment. But it gave the surf session a special aura. The fog didn´t lift all day, so I had two hazy sessions, before I had to leave.
On the way back I took a detour through Bodmin Moors. I had a stop at a place with ruined mining buildings and an ancient stone circle. The fog had become lighter, but when I walked through the stoned circle a bank of very thick fog rolled in almost like a wave. Visibility diminished to a few meters within a minute. Almost immediately I started to loose orientation and suddenly some massive dogs approached through the fog. This got scary and I decided to get back to the van immediately. Luckily I found the way back without getting lost.
