Salicorn: That green salty plant fits very good to salmon and pasta. Makes a very tasty meal and is cooked in 10 minutes. Just the cleaning of the pan is a bit more time consuming. Funny that Salicorn costs half the price on markets in Bayonne compared to the markets on Ile de Ré, where it is grown and harvested in the salines. But that´s capitalism.
Summer traffic: This can become a nightmare. The cluster of Bayonne – Biarritz – St. Jean de Luz can produce notorious traffic jams. Parking space is extremely limited. Add to this a solid summer heat and imagine being cooked in your car whilst you approach the beach in snail speed.
If you want to visit towns like St. Jean de Luz it helps a lot having brought a bicycle. Find a parking lot way outside and pedal into town. Makes it a lot more enjoyable, no driving in circles in search of a free parking lot, no anxious walk back to the car with the thread of having to pay enormous traffic tickets. There is time to have a look at the beautiful Cote de Basques landscapes and a few more remote corners of the towns.
Still this doesn´t help a lot, when you want to go for a surf in Biarritz or at places further south. And sometimes the combination of traffic and heat just gets too much and I prefer to flee the coast and get into the mountainous heartland of the Basque country.
