In the off season there is an immense offer of moderate priced accommodations. We picked one on the “Mönchgut” peninsula at the south-eastern because this is one of the most beautiful corners of Rügen. The better known towns of Binz, Baabe and Sellin or the chateau Granitz are accessible by bicycle from here, for further parts of the island you have to drive. But as one wouldn´t leave the basecamp without windsurfing equipment anyhow, driving will be the general way of exploring the island. But you should at least spend a day at the nature reserve „Zickersche Berge“ on Mönchgut – here we indeed discovered the most beautiful parts of the island.

Mönchsgut also offers a lot for windsurfers. There is plenty of flat water spots, some of them with exquisite freestyle conditions. The “kite and windsurfguide Europe” gives a good overview. But besides the in the guide featured spots, there is plenty of more options with good access to the sea and almost no crowds (for example at Middelhagen). What stood out was that locals and visitors alike were extremely friendly and never hesitated to share the knowledge about their “secret spot” fitting best for the day and the conditions. Looks like in the off-season it never gets crowded enough to create any stress.

In contrary to the “BigDays” we didn´t get northeast wind, which meant that Neu Mukran didn´t come alive. But storm “Christian” hit the island with full force from a south- to south-westerly direction, regrettably with too much south to create good conditions at one of the wave-spots in the north. But on the “Bodden” (brackish water ponds on the island) it was going off. At the beginning the 4.0 sail was still controllable on the freestyle board, but in the afternoon even the 3.7 sail in combination with the wave board was out of control. At about 16:00 o´clock the storm released its full hurricane force. From the south a grey wall was approaching, that looked like a heavy rain squall.
