I took my time to watch them and get a clue about how this place works. Once in a while some gnarly slab-like waves closed the channel. Soon the wind completely died and it was time to get wet myself. Due to the cold air – it had about 4 degrees – I choose my thickest neoprene. The combination of the cold air and the fairly warm sea – it had around 12 degrees – felt a bit strange, but it was better than the other way round. My timing was good and I got out with dry hair, having the lineup for myself, as the other guys had quit their session.

My first take off was wrong timed and ended in a wipeout, but the second one was good and I rode a surprisingly fast left.

The session ended way too soon due to a combination of lack of fitness and way too short days. The drive back to our hostel was long and inland there was still the odd snow shower.

The next day we spent with more explorations into an unusual Luberon Winter. Wandering through snow covered cedar trees was a strange experience. It stayed snowy and cold for two more days until we left our cosy hostel with hope of getting a more Mediterranean weather. And indeed, in the afternoon the sun came out and with it the beautiful lighting that was one of the main reasons for our holiday choice.

We reached the Grand Canyon in the late afternoon, eager to leave the van and enjoy at least the last rays of a sun, that we hadn´t seen for a while. We decided to spend the night at the shore of the Lac de Sainte Croix.
