Skies were already grey when we entered the Luberon. During the afternoon we made a little excursion to L´Isle Sur La Sorgue. The little river was swollen from the heavy rain, which soon turned into big snow flocks. On the way back to our hostel, we already had to deal with snow covered roads, which didn´t disturb us too much in contrary to the locals, who obviously were not used to snow at all. Next day we went to Les Beaux and Arles, finding the whole area covered by a layer of snow of about 15 cm thicknesses. According to the radio, this happened more than ten years ago for the last time. Not the best weather for a stroll through Arles, but luckily we stumbled into a church that was used for a stunning exhibition of modern art.

A massive storm blowing from the east had to be blamed for this unusual weather. This same storm was causing 10m waves at the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, who smashed the windows on the bridge of a cruise ship, as I later found out. Actually I only could do the maths and decided to drive to the coast the next day and see what was left once the storm had passed.

I hit the road the next morning, leaving my girls in the warmth of the hostel. First contact with the ocean I had in the area of La Ciotat. The beaches here face west and I was pretty surprised to see some waves here. That easterly wind swell had to bend more than 90 degree around the cape to reach these shores. The wind was offshore but the waves were pretty round and I saw only on SUP guy out. I decided to continue driving to the east coast.
