When I reached the lighthouse it was already difficult to find a parking space along the road. About 30 windsurfer vans and cars were parked and plenty of sailors were busily moving around, checking the wind and preparing gear, all of them full of anticipation for a good sail. Who said, that windsurfing is dead?
I choose a 5.0 sail and my wave board and went out, doing my typical thing. A bit of port tack jumping – which definitely is not my chocolate side – and the odd backside and front side slash in the cross-onshore conditions. I had a lot of fun and once again was happy that I still carry all that windsurf gear in my van. I had to share the small waves with a bunch of freestyle comrades, older guys my age just going fast, a few sailors really knowing how to jump and two surfers plus a daring kite-boarder. This place definitely still is windsurfing territory!
It stayed windy and sunny and warm all afternoon and after two sessions I finished with a big smile. There were still more sailors arriving, but I had enough and hit the road to drive back home. Not far from Lübeck the typical weekend traffic jam materialized so I decided to avoid standing in line and made a little detour to the bridge.
Not that I had enough energy left for an evening surf session, but it´s still more fun to watch the surfers out there milking the onshore mush to the max than staring on a car in front of my windscreen without moving.
