In contrast to the Anaga mountains you will meet quite a few people in the major towns and cities of the island.

We already talked about tourist hell Los Christianos. Endless hotel and apartment bunkers, an architect’s nightmare, overprized and mostly not really good restaurants, useless shops in abundance, too many people of the wrong kind. Go there it you feel like getting drunk and wanr to play sort of a Russian roulette on the issue of waking up with a terrible hangover in a strangers bed the next morning.

Puerto de la Cruz has a bit more soul because it became a tourist resort a few decades earlier and still has a relevant population of locals living there.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is THE cultural centre of the island mainly due to its history in combination with the university and the harbour. Good night life too. Locals from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria still call it provincial though….

Garachico on the north-west coast is a nice town to visit. Formerly the main harbour on the island until a lava stream filled up the harbour a century ago. Still very nice colonial style architecture, nice bars and restaurants and a few very stylish hotels. Fantastic surrounding scenery. If you happen to be there around three kings go check the nativity play. VERY good show!

Hint: there are a few very nicely situated apartments to rent within the banana plantations at El Guincho. Very basic but with fantastic view and large gardens. Bananas, avocados and oranges can be picked just outside if you stay nice with the owners.
