From here on the coastal strip gets narrower and narrower as the Teno mountains come closer to the coast. At the southern end the wild lava flanks of the mountains get near vertical and leave just enough space for the curvy dead end road to Punta de Teno. Very worth the drive with spectacular outlooks and the extremely beautiful cape of Punta de Teno. On the way you might consider a stop at La Caleta to get wet.

The southwest coast is at its western parts just vertical cliffs. “Just” doesn´t it justice though, as the cliffs themselves are a spectacular natural wonder and the Teno mountains, that form them, are a highlight too. Only since a few decades accessible by a very windy road these high peaks catch and milk a lot of clouds and feed abundant vegetation in steep valleys, most of them even nowadays only accessible by long and strenuous hikes.

Further east the coastal area gets wider and ends at an almost flat region. Shadowed from rain by the Teno mountain range, this is one of the driest parts of the island, just a few barrancos (steep and narrow valleys) bring strips of vegetation down to the coast. Little rain, lots of sun, blue water and even some white sand carried over from the Sahara by Calima Winds (hot winds from the east) combine to maximum interest by the average “I mainly need lots of sun” northern European Tourist. The consequences are not pretty. Neither the resulting ugly tourist ghettos nor the entertainment you get there. On the other hand it might be a good idea to “intern” these folks here and keep them away from the more pristine areas of the island.

You should visit this area only when south-westerly swells are on their way, because there is a few really good surf spots in this area plus excellent wave sailing right in the centre of Los Christianos.
