Bunkers:
Like at so many places of the Danish North Sea coast a couple of WWII bunkers dominate the scenery. Seems like the German bunker builders had a liking for good surf spots and tried to mark them in a very dominant and bizarre manor.
There is a sandy parking lot, a string of dunes marking the line between raging sea and firm land and large sand beaches. What makes this place exceptional is a firm reef that sticks its nose out into the North Sea. This is a very rare occurrence at the Danish North Sea coast which elsewhere only has shifting sandbars.
On its not so rare days, the waves here break much better than anything else at the rest of Danish North Sea coast. Consequently, the place is not a secret anymore, already has hosted a couple of surf contest and nowadays regularly gets ridiculously crowded.
Klitmøller has plenty of rental houses, campsites and a few shops and Nystrup camping is just a five-minute walk away. So, accommodation is easy here and there is no need to camp in the wild, which is forbidden anyhow and gets regularly controlled by the Danish police. The fines are really high, and the money is much better invested in renting a house or going to the campsite.
Surfing: when the place is on, it´s one of, if not the best surf breaks in whole Denmark. The nowadays sand covered reef produces an A-frame that can get excellent. Due to its westerly exposition and the lack of jetties, the break is very much exposed to onshore winds. It only really works in the combination of no wind or even better easterly winds and a westerly swell.
Due to its fame and surf quality, the place can get very crowded when it´s on. Don´t go out, if you´re not ready for it and in any case respect the rules AND the locals!
