Heiligenhafen:

Just at the western entrance into the Fehmarn Sund, the channel between firm land and the island of Fehmarn, is situated the small town of Heiligenhafen. It used to be a fishermen´s town but now is dominated by the tourist industry. The old town center is mostly intact but the shops and restaurants clearly depend on the numerous guests that come here in summer. The stretch of sea between the old town and the sandy peninsula boardering the Fehmarn Sund is dominated by a very large yachting and recreational boats harbour. The peninsula here provides a very protected natural harbour that has been used since a long time.

The peninsula is created by the currents of the Fehmarn Sund that here kept depositing sand since ages and still work on connecting the peninsula to the eastern end of the bay. It´s eastern end is a natural sanctuary and hosts plenty of birds. It has nice fine sand beaches too that are not accessible with cars. The western end has easy access to a about 1 kilometre long stretch of beaches and the moderate price You have to pay for parking here shouldn´t hinder You to go there. The only downside are some 70ies Style hotel buildings that just do not fit into the natural beauty of this area.

windsurfing: the place is very popular with windsurfers. At the western end of the peninsula sometimes small fun waves make it around the point and offer nice jumping and a practicing area for Your first waverides. The outer sandbars keep the beaches further east protected and allow to gain speed before hitting a small ramp. Depending on wind force and direction wavesailing, freestyle or just cruising are the options. Waves never get higher than 1m so this is a good place for beginners and intermediate sailors too.

The waters between the peninsula and the mainland can offer fun flatwater sailing.

kiteboarding: the perfect location for kiteboarding. Large beaches and a very high chance of wind with the right force and direction. Good for beginners and learners too. Make use of the very large beach and stay clear from windsurfers, swimmers and bathing folks.

surfing: at the eastern part of the penisnula You might find some small and weak waves that can be surfed on a longboard.
