But as it stayed dry on land it got clear that this was flying water, whipped into the air by the wind about 10 – 15 meters high. We were lucky and had managed to secure our equipment in the van just in time. The storm left much less damage in Rügen as for example in the region around Flensburg, even so the weather station measured wind gusts of 139 km/h. But driving back to Mönchsgut with heavy gusts like this, causing boughs and sticks fly through the air, was nevertheless a bit scary.
A real present was handed to us the day after “Christian”. Perfect southwest wind suited for a 4.4 sail gave us a dream session in Kreptitz. You don´t hear much about this spot, probably because it doesn´t work that often. With adequate wind direction Kreptitz offers side-shore wind and waves in a mix of Weißenhaus and Heiligenhafen conditions. There is more room to gain speed before you hit the waves than in Weißenhaus and the waves are a bit weaker but way bigger than at “Halli” und invite you for 2 – 3 turns. The spot is also suited for jumping. A great playground! In addition you have a great panorama in front of the cliffs. It´s a bit tricky to pass the relatively long and steep metal staircase to the beach. But when you carry board and sail separately, it´s not an un-makeable obstacle.
The das in Kreptitz was by far the best of our Rügen trip. All together we could sail at 6 out of seven days with freestyle or wave equipment so the stats can compare with any further away trip.
Another highlight of our trip was tour along the coast of Göhren, passing Sellin, Baabe and Binz. During the off-season you can explore the forests along the cliffs by bicycle (bikes are officially not allowed on the tracks). There is quite a few sections that call for mountain bikes and there is plenty of fantastic views along the way.
